The best products to make breastfeeding easier on a first-time mom

If you have read a few of the blog post on this site, you know I am a full blown Amazon mom. I LOVE Amazon. I don’t know where my obsession stems from. I think it has something to do with the fact that raising babies and being a mom requires having stuff.  I mean all sorts of stuff. My Amazon recent order list is wild. Freeze was coming, ordered some plant covers. Need to do some big blog planning for 2018, ordered giant sticky notes for the wall. Dry weather brought super dry skin for all of us, ordered some extreme hydration lotion. It’s the first place I go when I need just about anything.

So it should come as no surprise that when I’m in need of some good breastfeeding hacks, I turn to Amazon.

Here are some of my favorite items I used to make my breastfeeding journey a little easier with both of my daughters.

Medela Tender Care Hydrogel Pads

Hydrogel pads are a big reason I feel this round of breastfeeding has been easier than my first I had terrible nipple pain and blistering with Emmy.  It made it very difficult. I would wince from pain when she latched. This time around, I have had minimal pain and NO blistering at all!

I was given a sample of the Medela Hydrogel pads while in the hospital and used them on our third night there. I only had them on for about 4 hours and was so pleased with how much of a difference they made in such a short time. I ordered a box before we even left the hospital!

On another note, I love how clean this type treatment is. While creams are great, they can be messy and I’m always worried I never wiped it all off before feeding baby. These peel away clean but still do some serious work on your nipples!

You can find them on Amazon here.

The Haakaa

I love my Haakaa so much that I wrote an entire blog post on how to use it! Up until delivering my second daughter, I had never heard of the Haakaa but as soon as a L&D nurse suggested it while I was in the hospital, I knew I had to have it!

A Haakaa is a silicon manual pump that attaches to your breast by suction onto your non-nursing breast. While baby feeds, it collects the milk from your let down that would normally be lost in a breast pad. The amount each woman collects varies but I typically saw 1-3 ounces per feeding. Image how much that would be after a week of feedings?! A haakaa is by far the easiest way to build a freezer stash.

You can browse the variety of haakaa choices here.

Let There Be Milk

I have this cabinet in my kitchen FILLED with milk production supplements.  I’ve tried SO many products. The struggle to keep my milk supply up with BOTH of my girls was so real. I discovered Let There Be Milk while breastfeeding Emmy and I made sure to have it on hand before Nora arrived.

Let There Be Milk is jam packed with all the good stuff that makes your milk flow. I speak from experience when I say it works!

They recently released it in capsule form and I think all breastfeeding mamas around the world rejoiced; the liquid version was pretty awful tasting! When it comes to select, go with the capsules!

My Breast Friend

When it comes to nursing pillows, I can’t tell you how much more I prefer the My Breast Friend to the competition.

My Breast Friend not only provides much more support than a poppy pillow, but it also attaches to mama, making things worlds easier.  Navigation the set up for a good nursing session can be complicated and I found that the poppy frequently slipped out-of-place. Having the velcro strap behind the back meant that even if I needed to stand up and grab one last thing before starting to feed, I was still ready to go.

My Breast Friend also has convenient pockets to keep much-needed items close by. I always had a burp cloth or two ticked in there and ready to go.

You can browse the color options for the My Breast Friend here.

Kindred Bravely Nursing Bras

Having a high quality and comfortable nursing bra is so important while breastfeeding. You need to be able to get easy access for baby while still having the support you need. For both of my breastfeeding Journeys, I loved the Kindred Bravely bras.

You guys want to know how I know that Kindred Bravely bras are the best ever? Because after I finished breastfeeding my first daughter I continued to wear them for months. They were so comfortable and fit me so well.

My day-wear bra selection is the Simply Sublime (pictured above). For night-time wear, I loved the French Terry Racer Back (seriously guys, go read the reviews on this bra because they are amazing and so true).

I hope this was a helpful list for my fellow breastfeeding mamas! Remember, you are doing a GREAT job!
