How to Fly With Breastmilk
Traveling with breastmilk for your baby can be a tricky process, but with a bit of preparation and knowledge, it doesn’t have to be a stressful experience. Here are some tips on how to safely travel with breastmilk:
Firstly, it’s important to note that breastmilk is classified as a “liquid medication” by the TSA, meaning it is allowed in carry-on luggage in quantities exceeding the standard 3.4-ounce limit. However, it’s a good idea to notify TSA agents at the security checkpoint that you are carrying breastmilk, and to have it easily accessible for inspection.
When packing breastmilk for travel, use containers made specifically for breastmilk storage, such as bags or bottles designed for freezing. Make sure each container is labeled with your baby’s name and the date the milk was expressed. Pack the containers snugly in an insulated cooler with ice packs or frozen gel packs to keep the milk at a safe temperature.
If you’re traveling by plane, consider using a breast pump with a battery-operated option in case an outlet is not available on the plane. You can also bring empty bottles and ask a flight attendant for hot water to warm up the milk if necessary.
During your travels, try to keep the milk at a consistent temperature as much as possible. Avoid leaving it in a hot car or direct sunlight, and don’t repeatedly freeze and thaw the milk as this can compromise its quality.
Finally, make sure to clean and sanitize all pumping and storage equipment regularly while traveling to maintain optimal hygiene for your baby.
With these tips in mind, you can confidently travel with breastmilk, ensuring your little one has the nourishment they need no matter where you go.
