Homemade baby wipes- a gentle solution for sensitive baby bottoms

Our sweet little Nora has been teething like a mad woman for a few weeks now.

All of the excess saliva has really made her bottom more susceptible to diaper rash.

While we’ve taken some other measures to help, I decided to give some homemade baby wipes a shot, just to make sure we were being as gentle as possible on her sensitive skin. Here’s what you will need:

  • Paper Towels
  • Knife
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tbsp coconut oil (can replace with baby oil if you wish)
  • 1 tbsp baby wash

To start, I cut a roll of paper towels in half using the sharpest knife I had. I made a BIG mistake here. I thought using a bread type knife would be best, since it had those extra teeth to really cut through. This ended up shredding the paper towels more than cutting them!

So when selecting a knife, go with the sharpest smooth blade that you have.

Also, the paper towel choice is important. I personally used Brawny, but other mamas have vouches that Bounty works great too. Keep in mind that while you want these wipes to be sensitive, they can’t be too thin and flimsy or they will just kind of dissolve as they sit in the liquid solution over time.

Also, find your storage tub BEFORE you buy the paper towels. I had trouble finding on that was tall enough for the size of half a paper towel roll and when I finally did find it (Dollar Store for the WIN), it was pretty thin. I had to buy the regular size rolls of towels, not the jumbo-three-rolls-in-one size.

Once you have them cut in half, remove the  cardboard center of the roll and place in your container. (tip: if it is difficult to remove the cardboard, you can wait until the liquid solution softens it a bit to remove it.)

After your paper towels are cut in half, heat the coconut oil to make it liquid. This only takes about 20 second for the amount we are using.

Next, add water and baby wash. I opted for Aveeno Baby Soothing Relief Creamy Wash.

Both of my girls have had pretty sensitive skin since about 3 months of age and I really love how well this moisturizes their skin but is still gentle.

Once your mixture is ready, pour it evenly over your paper towels.

Give the solution a couple of hours to absorb throughout the towels.

Once you are ready to use them, pull from the center of the roll.

There you have it! Homemade baby wipes! If you little one has a sensitive bottom like mine, be sure to also read the post below on diaper rash!
