Baby items are notorious for having price tags that will leave you wondering if the thing is capable of flying. I love a good bargain and am always hunting down good deals. But when it came to welcoming my first child into the world, there were a few items a splurged on and after putting them to use for a few month, I don’t regret forking over the extra cash.
A Pack and Play with all the bells and whistles
I have a 10 year old niece and from what I remember, a Pack N’ Play was just like a playpen- 4 net walls and a soft bottom. So needless to say I was super overwhelmed when I wandered down the isle at Baby’s R Us.
The Pack n’ Plays now looked like spaceships. With a price tag to match.
I wondered if my baby really needed all this stuff? She wont even have the faintest memory of her time in here.
Come to realize, baby didn’t need all the bells and whistles, but mama did. I ended up buying the Graco Pack N’ Play with the sleeper and changing table attachments.
When it came time to set up an area in our master bedroom for baby, we realized the Pack N’ Play had it all. We had a changing table station with all the storage we needed for diapers and wipes. The sleeper had build in music and vibrations.
When our baby was just a few months old I went to visit my mom for a week and it was so nice to have our whole set up that we were used to at home there with us thanks to its easy ability to travel. So in the end I did end up buying the “higher end” product, but I don’t regret it one bit.
Good Quality Nursing Bras
This item is technically for mama, but it’s still crucial. I am blessed to have two sisters who are my best friends and will tell it to me like it is. I purchased a bargain nursing bra and upon their first visit to my house after baby came home they basically told me my boobs looked like a soggy loaf of bread under my shirt.
That was all the convincing I needed to head to the mall and buy a better quality supporter. I figured I would be wearing these bras every day for the next 6 months to a year, it’s an investment. I ended up buying 2 underwire bras, one nude and one black, a sports bra and 2 sleep bras for $96 at Destination Maternity.
They have been washed multiple times and are holding up great. If I had to spend the money again I would. $96 is a solid price to pay for non-soggy looking boobs.
A baby monitor with a heart rate monitor built in
You cannot put a price tag on sound peace of mind. That’s exactly what our baby monitor provides, but it definitely wasn’t the cheapest one on the shelf. Looking back, I would pay the same price again if I had to. Once baby and I were in a good sleep routine, she was usually heading to bed around 8-8:30 and I would stay up for a little mommy time. It was so nice to be able to really relax in the next room while she slept peacefully. Keep in mind that you will most likely be using your baby monitor for a few years. The extra few dollars for a reliable one that monitors what matters most is totally worth it.
A Convenient and Quick Bottle Warmer
I did a ton of research when it came to the topic of bottle warmers. It seemed like there were endless choices but I didn’t want to just pick the cheapest one. I had read reviews on so many products, some had complaints about the milk being overheated, others complained that the bottle warmer came in what seemed like 52 small parts that you had to put together.
In the end, I purchased one that cost more than I would have ever guessed I would have spent. However, now that we have put it to the test every day for over 4 months, I’m happy we splurged and bought one that provides so much convince.
First of all, the water does not have to be refilled each time you want to use it. The water is stored in a reservoir at the bottom and rises up once you click it on. It created like a mini hot tub for the milk. This helps it have an even heat and never any hot spots. Plus, its super easy to use. You literally just turn a dial to set the time.
That’s all it takes to get this bad boy going. I appreciate this ease when my hands are occupied with a crying baby!
An Amazon Prime Membership
Ok so this is not technically a tangible item but work with me here.
$99 for a membership seemed ridiculous to me. I didn’t buy THAT much stuff on Amazon so the 2 day free shipping probably wouldn’t pay for itself in the year, right? NO. Wrong. So Wrong.
I realized when my daughter was just a few days old that there were certain items I was using alot more of than I planned to (burp clothes, baby detergent, nipple cream). I didn’t have the time, energy or desire to go to the store, so I set out searching on Amazon and had everything delivered in just 2 days. It was so glorious and convenient. Plus, there are so many other perks besides the zero dollar shipping thing.
I have fallen in love with Amazon Family. It allows me to have my essentials send to me each month automatically at a discounted rate. I have baby wipes, diapers, paper towels and toilet paper all set to arrive at the beginning of the month and its cheaper than I would be able to find in store! You also have access to a ton of free movies and other goodies. So all in all- the $99 was ABSOLUTELY worth it.
